Sharon Marks - First Day of School
"My name is Sharon Marks and when I was at six years of age on September of 1937 it was the first day of school and I was about to start the first grade. Up until that time, Grandpa Jurgensen had always escorted me to kindergarten but I told the family that morning, I’m a big girl now and I’m going to be in the first grade and the family smiled, they didn’t laugh at me, but they smiled and said all right we’ll give it a try. So I start off and everything went fine. It was about a 10 block walk but I only had one place I had to cross the street and we came to that and I started crossing, I was feeling very confident and strutting a bit and I look down the street. About two blocks away, it wasn’t coming fast but there was a car coming in my direction and I panicked! I whirl around and I ran back and there was Grandpa Jurgensen. He had followed me to make sure I got to school okay."
