Nettie Kriegel - Musical Parents

"My name is Nettie Kriegel, and I remember my mom and my dad sitting out on the front porch, especially in the summertime. My dad played the violin by ear. My mother played the banjo by ear. They played the popular stories of that time."

Nettie Kriegel - After School Work

"We used to come home from school and as soon as we got home, we had to take our clothes off that we wore to school because we didn’t have enough money to buy a lot of clothes. As soon as we got home, they started telling us – my brothers and sisters, and me what to do. There were eggs to gather, weeds to pull, potatoes to dig, cows to milk, turkeys and chickens to feed. We grew Kentucky wonder green beans, corn on the cob, potatoes, tomatoes, rhubarb, green beans – Kentucky wonders. That’s about it."

Nettie Kriegel - 100 Percent Recipes

"One of my favorite recipes is potato casserole. I have a few recipes that every time I fixed it, and somebody came and ate it – they would ask for the recipe. I called that my 100% recipe. This is one of my 100% recipes. I bake it in a casserole dish. It is not hard to fix, but it is a little bit different. I also have a fruit cake that I like to make that was a little bit different from the others because a lot of people don’t like the citron and the raisins. This fruit cake was another 100 percenter. It is not very hard to make. There is a quarter cup of pecans, 8 ounces of candied cherries and 8 ounces of candied pineapple, a pound of butter, a box - that’s a pound of brown sugar, 6 eggs and of course your flour, a little pinch of salt, a little pinch of baking powder. You bake it in the stove for a couple of hours."
